Azri Afework

THEY/THEM

Board Member

Azri Afework is a Detroit-born African, whose people came here via Alabama and Eritrea. Azri learned a love of growing from their grandparents (Grandfather with the vegetables, Grandma with the flowers) and is country enough to grow sunflowers and food in the front yard. They've had their own garden almost as long as they've had a house and been a member of the Garden Resource Program about that long (more than a decade, but not quite two). More recently they began Reclamation Learning Garden in Brightmoor, where they are learning to grow on a larger scale (despite the deer). Azri is also an awardee of the Detroit Black Farmer Land Fund. Outside of the garden, they spend time with their teenage child and senior dog.
