Youth Programs
It is vitally important that each generation understands the process it takes to get food on their plates and gain the skills to be able to grow their own food! Youth 14-19 are invited to join us throughout the season for farm training opportunities or pop into our open volunteer hours at the KGD Farm to complete community service hours.
If you are a teacher or youth group leader who is interested in engaging your youth in a beginner garden class, food systems class, volunteer time at the KGD Farm or would like a speaker for your event please contact us.

Summer Youth Apprenticeship
Each year in partnership with Grow Detroit's Young Talent, KGD employs a team of youth to work along side our staff to learn the skills that it takes to grow food and gain an appreciation for fresh, sustainably grown produce. The Summer Youth Apprenticeship program will take place at the KGD Farm. This 6 week program will run between July 9 -August 16, 2024. Youth Apprentices will meet Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10am-3pm. The ideal candidate for the Apprenticeship is hardworking, open to learning new things, enjoy being outdoors and be excited about serving their community.
Applications are now open for the 2024 Summer Youth Apprenticeship. We are looking for youth living in Detroit between the ages of 14-19, who want to gain experience in the urban agriculture field and build skills and capacity around food justice, food sovereignty, financial literacy and work readiness.
Applications are due by May 17.
Interviews will be given during the week of May 20.
Apprentices will be selected by May 31.
