THEY/THEM

Rukiya (they/them) is a Detroit native who’s been stewarding land in their personal space and soon in their childhood neighborhood. Their love + dedication to fostering community rooted in ecosystems of care consists of their knowledge as a masters of urban planning graduate, organizer/activist, journalist, experience as founding member of The Solutionaries Collective, mother, and general curiosity with their  work + ideology being rooted in abolition.

They’ve been able to continue their grandmother’s legacy of stewarding land after learning of KGD’s Garden Resource Program in 2020 and hasn’t stopped advocating for food +land sovereignty since then as they document their journey regularly on social media. They’re also a 2022 recipient for the Detroit Black Farmer Land Fund. Catch them people watching, hanging with their cool toddler, venturing throughout the city on any given day for an event, or embedded in a writing project.
