Family Foodways Cooking Class with Chef Carlos! - 7/15

  • Georgia St. Community Collective 8902 Vinton Avenue Detroit, MI, 48213 United States (map)

Our 2026 Family Foodways series at Keep Growing Detroit continues with a celebration of another culture and food in our diaspora.

Casabe — A Taste of Taíno Tradition with Chef Carlos!

Join Chef Carlos for an exploration of casabe, a traditional flatbread made from yuca (cassava) that has nourished Indigenous peoples of the Caribbean for centuries. Attendees will learn about the rich history of casabe among the Taíno people, discover the process of transforming yuca into this staple food, and explore the many ways casabe can be enjoyed—from simple everyday meals to cultural celebrations. Through food, stories, and shared learning, we'll honor an enduring Indigenous tradition that continues to connect communities across generations. As with all of our classes, we will harvest produce from the KGD farm to go along with the casabe.

Join us as we share recipes, memories, and cultural traditions that remind us how food connects generations and keeps our roots growing deep.

Cook, taste, and connect as we honor the flavors and traditions that link our family roots across the cultural diaspora and enjoy another year of Family Foodways experiences with Keep Growing Detroit.

To honor all of the incredible time each chef puts into sharing their culture through these dishes, we are asking all attendees to RSVP.

This is due to the limited space for the class, and to ensure there's enough for everyone to have a small tasting.
