Learn more about KGD Farm

  • Each year, hundreds of thousands of vegetable and herb transplants and 7,000 heads of Motown Music seed garlic are grown and distributed at the KGD Farm to +2,000 Detroit-based gardeners and farmers participating in our Garden Resource Program. We also grow 10,000 native plants and nearly 10,000 pounds of produce for KGD programs, donation to community partners, and sale to Detroit-based residents, organizations, and food businesses.

  • In addition to being a productive growing space, the KGD Farm is also a gathering space and hub for Detroit’s urban agriculture community. It safely welcomes hundreds of Grown in Detroit growers and customers as they drop off or pick up fresh produce through our Online Farm Store and/or Community Support Agriculture (CSA) programs. Other events hosted at the site include hands-on workshops on a wide range of topics for local growers, farm tours, community dinners, health and healing classes, and volunteer opportunities for individuals and groups interested in learning about and contributing to Detroit’s local food system.

  • The KGD Farm also serves as a regional model for farm conservation practices including season extension, soil management, cover cropping, beekeeping, pollinator habitat, rainwater collection, and micro irrigation. Our infrastructure at the KGD Farm, including pollinator gardens, beehives, hightunnels, and a 4,400 gallon rainwater collection and irrigation system allow us to demonstrate these conservation practices and provide technical assistance to growers that were interested in applying for resources from the USDA’s Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) and/or navigating the City of Detroit’s permitting processes.
