This month’s Gathering of Growers will feature special guest, Kirsten Kirby! Join Kirby and Rosebud as they talk about one of their favorite plant relatives, corn. During this Gathering, they’ll lead us through a demonstration on how to make corn flour.
Kirby Shoote is a Tlingít urban farmer and cultural food worker based in Detroit, MI. Their work explores the various avenues of Indigenous food sovereignty and the ways in which ancestral practices can benefit the future. Since 2018, Kirby's urban farm ŁEILÚ has been dedicated to fostering the growth of traditional foods and medicines. They also host place- based pop ups under the name be'-be, the Chinook jargon word for "to kiss". These culinary experiences aim to give people a glimpse into the diversity and beauty within Native cuisine.
The Gathering of Growers, led by Rosebud, is a special time for us to gather monthly to break bread together and explore a seasonal food or practice that will guide the gathering. Using our collective traditional ecological knowledge, we will take each month to explore seasonal practices, delve deeper into the 13 Moon cycle and teachings and support all growers through the growing season. We believe creating opportunities like this only strengthens us in our sovereignty. See you there!
